Its massive pylons and outer walls are covered with reliefs extolling the King's prowess in battle, particularly his repulse of invasions by Libyans and Sea Peoples. Vivid tableaux in the same vein show the King in pursuit of lions, wild bulls and other game. Inside the temple, the two outer courtyards are dominated by great piers with engaged statues of the King manifesting the various aspects of his divine nature. The second (inner) court is also decorated with brightly painted festival scenes. Primarily a model dwelling for the King's spirit, the palace was also used by royalty on visits to western Thebes and exhibits a number of interesting ritual and domestic features. The inner parts of the temple are divided by three columned halls that give on to a number of chambers and suites, including treasuries, cult rooms and chapels of divinities, particularly of the sun-god Re, of Osiris, King of the netherworld, and the King, worshipped in this temple as an aspect of Amun. An earlier structure, commonly known as the 'Small Temple', was incorporated by Ramesses III into his enclosure. It was built under Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III. The core structure consists of a classically designed chapel for the processional shrine of Amun, with surrounding portico, in front of the cult rooms of the temple proper at the rear. This 'Small Temple'—dedicated to an aspect of Amun that brought regeneration to the blessed dead—enjoyed an enduring popularity, which is reflected in the additions made at the front of the building, principally by the Nubian pharaohs of the 25th Dynasty (c. 750–c. 656 BCE), the Ptolemies (304–30 BCE) and the Romans (30 BCE– 395 CE).
