Its high wall, an irregular pentagon in plan, has rounded bastions at four of its angles. Constructed of red sandstone with white marble trim, the tomb adopts some of its decorative scheme from the ‛Alaاi Darvaza, but its proportions differ, and it has a number of distinctive features. The pronounced batter of the walls, which characterize Tughluq-period buildings from this time onwards, was probably derived from the sloping walls of brick structures, such as those in Multan, where Ghiyath al-Din originally served as governor. The tomb is square in plan (about 8 m on each side) and has high recessed archways on the north, south and east; the qibla wall is closed and marked by a mihrab on the interior. The entrance portals have a spearhead fringe on the intrados and are outlined with a band of white marble. This band is carried down into a bold string course of white marble running round the middle of the entire structure. Above the string course in the upper register are small ornamental niches with rectangular white marble surrounds. The tomb's white marble dome is set on an octagonal drum and crowned with a sandstone finial typical of Indian temple architecture. It consists of a grooved disc (Skt āmalasārika) and pot (kalaśa). On the interior the dome is supported by squinches like those on the ‛Alaاi Darvaza. There are three graves inside the tomb. The central one belongs to Ghiyath al-Din Tughluq and the others are probably those of his wife and his son and successor, Muhammad Tughluq (reg 1325–51).
