St. Louis, (M.T.) - Bank of Missouri $50 Dec. 16, 1819 MO-30 UNL. PCGS Very Fine 30. A very rare denomination from the Chouteau-signed series and unlisted in Haxby. Missing from all the major collections surveyed for this sale's pedigrees and populations, including Vacca and the Western Reserve Historical Society. We are uncertain whether this unlisted denomination has two engraved obligation styles since this is the first $50 denomination we have studied in detail. Eric obtained it long ago, but after he had compiled his collection inventory; the Bank of Missouri section is particularly well documented with its plate letter, date, and signature varieties copiously listed. This is a fascinating example endorsed on the back by Wm. Rector. He was the defendant in the 1824 state court case \"President and Directors of the Bank of Missouri FBO John O'Fallon v. William Rector.\" The promissory note in question as disputed in the case exists in the Missouri State Archives. Printed by Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. on banknote bond paper. The style is similar to all the other denominations from $1 to $20, but the vignette shifts locations again: At the upper left, the Jefferson bust is on a riverbank, flanked by merchandise on both sides, with JEFFERSON arcing above the head. Titles and obligation are across with \"bearer\" written rather than engraved. The ornate end panels, characteristic of the imprint, are similar with FIFTY at the left and MISSOURI at the right. Plate A. No. 624. Signed by Langham as cashier and Aug. Chouteau as bank president. Issued to Wm. Rector or \"bearer.\" Endorsed by Wm. Rector on the back. A stunning note although some minor ink shows to the face at left center under the vignette. This is a very rare type issued to a prominent figure in the aftermath of the bank's dissolution. Both a significant Missouri Territory financial artifact and a beautiful note. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society \n\n
