Gladfelter note: Engraved and printed by Henry Ashby, London, whose imprint appears in the left margin. Although defaced by graffiti, this specimen is the only known example of an Ashby bill to retain the full original stub and full selvage around the entire bill. The impression of the copper printing plate is sunk into the paper fabric within the selvage. The word VIRGINIA can be seen within the scroll work of the left margin (partly trimmed away on circulated examples).
