Mercier (1786–1874), a former pupil of J.-B. Regnault, professor at the Angers drawing school and Director of Angers Museum. He obtained a municipal grant from Mercier to study at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and entered François-Edouard Picot's atelier in 1837. In 1847 he won the Prix de Rome with the grisly Death of Vitellius (Paris, Ecole N. Sup. B.-A.). Before leaving for Rome, he finished a fresco for the church in Mareille (1847). He spent five years in Rome from 1848 to 1853, travelled across Italy and Sicily and copied not only the Antique but also Michelangelo, Veronese, Titian, Correggio and Raphael. In 1889 he completed scenes from the Life of Joan of Arc in the Pantheon, Paris, which were used to illustrate history books for several generations.
