North Carolina December 29, 1785 2 Shillings 6 Pence Fr. NC-211. PCGS Choice About New 55PPQ. A remarkable note and miracle of survival in this lofty state. All notes from this late Thomas Davis issue are very rare in any grade. This is the finest seen of any denomination from the series and is thought to be Rarity 8 (1-3 known). Printed on both sides on thick paper. At left is the Phoenix vignette with the motto MELIOR RESURGIO (I return improved). Border cuts are all around. Signed crisply by Absalom Tatom and John Hunt. The back is perpendicular to the face with text and ornaments. Broadly margined on three sides and complete at the left. The surfaces are immaculate and the handling light. A museum-caliber note that exceeds the condition of even the highest-grade Boyd collection shilling note. Illustrated on the color plates on page 52 of the Newman reference.
