PCGS Fine 15 Apparent.  This is a great rarity, engraved and printed using a banknote style by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch, & Edson. This is another issuer that Jim Haxby, using his criteria, did not list as a bank, but could have justifiably included. At the top center is a small oval portrait of Washington wrapped within the lengthy titles. At the left end is standing Justice. At the right end is standing Athena. A red protector ONE is at the bottom center. Prior to the Newman Collection example offered here, we have only one auction record of this issuer and denomination, a raw Good example we sold at the 2007 St. Louis sale. Noted with \"HPC; Missing UL Corner Tip; Edge and Internal Tears; Hinge and Mounting Remnants on Back.\" Iowa notes are well collected, and this was reflected in active bidding at both the Newman Part VI sale in April 2015 and the Part VII sale in October 2015. The Newman Collection $3 note from this series, PCGS Fine 15 Apparent, realized $2,115 in the latter sale. The presence of some faults in no way overshadows the great rarity of this Iowa note.
