(Brunswick, MO) - Merchant & Beazley 25 Cents Undated (ca. 1860s). PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. Though there is no state, city, or date printed on this diminutive note, it is attributed as a Union-area note from Brunswick, Missouri, by Eric Newman. It has an early Civil War-period style. The two partners in the tobacco business (1860-1871), Jacob A. Merchant and Thomas Beazley, lived in Brunswick, Missouri at the time the note is thought to have been printed. Merchant had worked in a tobacco factory as a boy and Beazley was a long-time tobacco dealer. The busy railroad stop of Brunswick received tobacco wagons for shipments along the lines and was home to a branch of Merchant's Bank of St. Louis, which suspended banking during the war. Merchant later entered the banking business, becoming Cashier of the Chariton County Exchange bank upon its establishment in 1877 (History of Howard and Chariton Counties, Missouri, 1883) and became president of the First National Bank of Brunswick in 1898 (Parsons Daily Sun, April 20, 1898). This small-format note was printed on laid paper without imprint. A fancy border all around encloses the simple obligation and TWENTY-FIVE CENTS across. A large red numeral 25 is in the center. The written serial number 45 is at top left, and the well-penned signature combination is at the bottom. Noted with \"Repaired Edge Split at Top Center,\" done with a short backing strip of glassine tape. A charming example, and very likely unique. Ex: Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society \n\n
