One of the great treasures of the Eric P. Newman Collection, the design garnered the number four position on the 100 Greatest American Currency Notes list. The notes were given their \"Lazy Deuce\" nickname due to the fact that the \"2\" is positioned horizontally rather than vertically. The arrangement of the $2 National Bank notes is exceptional. Stars and Stripes, the vignette at left was the work of Engraver Luigi (Louis) Delnoce, a student of John W. Casilear. The vignette at center on the back, also engraved by Delnoce, is Sir Walter Raleigh Presenting Corn and Tobacco to the English (there are several variations of the title). Another interesting aspect of the design of the notes is that the state or territorial seal of the issuing bank was included within an oval frame on the back at left. This is the most significant Missouri note offered in decades. The First National Bank of St. Louis was organized in October 1863 and began operations on October 10 in a building located at the intersection of Fifth Street and Carondelet Avenue. This is the only note known from the bank, the first institution to receive a federal charter in St. Louis and one which lasted only long enough to issue Original Series notes before closing its doors forever in 1870. Not only is it unique for the bank, one of the few first 100 charter banks represented by a lone example, it bears bank serial number 1 as well. This is one of only two First Charter serial number 1 specimens extant from any St. Louis bank. It is also, according to the current National Bank Note Census, one of only three \"Lazy Deuces\" known from all St. Louis banks combined. The other two have been off the market for decades, and never offered at public sale. PCGS notes a few small flaws, including a minor foreign substance on the face near the upper right corner as well as a small paper pull on the back at right. However, these are easily overlooked when considering the sole opportunity to bid on this unique number 1 note from one of the first 100 charter banks.   Ex: Eric P.
