The unusual design is reminiscent of the so-called Panch Mahal at Fatehpur Sikri. The lowest level (103.94×103.94×9.14 m), which functions as a high plinth, has arcades on all four sides. These are divided into square bays by massive piers and arches. The original decoration in the arcades has been destroyed. In the centre of each side of the plinth there is a projecting portal, set within a rectangular frame. The frame carries panels with bold geometric inlay in colored marble. The entrance, through the southern portal, leads to a vestibule profusely ornamented with floral and calligraphic designs in incised stucco and paint (some have been restored). An inclined passage runs down to the square tomb chamber (12.19×12.19×18.29 m), now stripped of any original decoration. Akbar's simple brick-and-mortar tombstone is placed in the centre. Four ventilators from the chamber open on the third storey above. The superstructure of the tomb consists of four storeys resting on the plinth, the lower three of which are open halls with square pillars and ornamental arches. The fifth storey, entirely in white marble, has a court open to the sky surrounded by arcades closed by carved screens. Akbar's marble cenotaph and an octagonal marble pedestal are placed on the platform. A mystical poem in Persian runs around the interior of the upper arcade under a stone projection (Hindi chajjā). The tomb has a variety of marble-faced chatrīs (domed pavilions) on each level. Engaged towers at the corner of the plinth are crowned by massive octagonal pavilions; slender square chatrīs stand at the corners of the highest level; chaparkhats (chatrīs that are oblong in form) rise above the main recessed arch of each façade. It has been suggested (by the English traveler William Finch, who visited Agra in 1608–11, and by others since) that the upper storey was to have been crowned by a dome.
