Fayette, MO - Bank of the State of Missouri, at Fayette $20 Contemporary Counterfeit Aug. 1, 1857 MO-60 C124 SENC. PCGS Very Fine 25 Apparent. This is a rare contemporary counterfeit in high grade with the false imprint of Toppan, Carpenter & Co. Philada. seen at bottom center. It exhibits the counterfeit diagnostics clearly and shows some interesting differences from the genuine branch note type. The Gothic-style \"Countersigned\" and \"& Registered\" red stampings at the top are divided by the vignette; the two \"A\" plate letters are in red (they also are in black on some counterfeits with this false plate style); \"Comr.\" is in red, but the line above it is in black and preceded by \"No.\" At top center, enthroned Moneta appears to instruct the young woman sitting on her lap, and the vignettes show crude renderings of Benton, Linn, Van Buren, and Jackson. Plate A. No. 1181. The false signatures are light. \"Edge Tears\" are noted by grading. The note is very crisp and vibrant for a counterfeit from this period. The finest we have seen of this type.
