The face design was based on art work by Edwin H. Blashfield and Thomas F. Morris; the former was responsible for the figures, and the latter for the background and frame. Charles Schlecht and G.F.C. Smillie were the engravers. The back features inventors Robert Fulton and Samuel F.B. Morse. The design earned the number 11 spot in the Whitman reference, 100 Greatest American Currency Notes.
