The small change notes from this series certainly should be classified as \"paper coins\"; they were created to satisfy \"the want of small change\" as cited from the Newman reference. Three denominations were authorized and over 1,000,000 notes printed. The common style printed by Hugh Gaine, New York used ornamental borders on both sides. On the face, the engraved signature of City Treasurer D. Phoenix is in script. The back has the denomination in the center and imprint at the base. Most notes from the series are worn, and many are damaged. This is a sharp example of the type. Ex: Eric P.
