Colin carved the sandstone figures on the façade and on the interior doorways of the new wing of the castle (begun 1556). The complex and pointedly Italianate project includes statues of Virtues, biblical figures and Classical deities. The figures, with gently swaying poses and clinging Classical drapery, are arranged in niches between the windows on the first three storeys. Colin borrowed several figural motifs from the prints of Marcantonio Raimondi, Marten van Heemskerck and Cornelis Floris, but fashioned from them a coherent and stylistically harmonious ensemble unparalleled in earlier German art.
