It was built under Hatshepsut and Tuthmosis III. The core structure consists of a classically designed chapel for the processional shrine of Amun, with surrounding portico, in front of the cult rooms of the temple proper at the rear. Many of the reliefs have almost perfectly-preserved paint, making them valuable resources for technique and iconographic details. This 'Small Temple'—dedicated to an aspect of Amun that brought regeneration to the blessed dead enjoyed an enduring popularity, which is reflected in the additions made at the front of the building, principally by the Nubian pharaohs of the 25th Dynasty (c. 750–c. 656 BCE), the Ptolemies (304–30 BCE) and the Romans (30 BCE–CE 395). The last extension, a portico and front court begun under Antoninus Pius (reg CE 138–61), was never finished, although the cult endured until the fall of paganism in Egypt.
