St. Louis, MO - Union Bank of Missouri, at their Bank in ___ $1 July 1, 1861 MO-65 G98a. Proof. PCGS Very Choice New 64 Apparent. A stunning red-tinted India paper proof printed from beautiful plates by the American Bank Note Co. Philada. It has the same layout as the green-tinted issued note previous. Haxby's opinion regarding this red tint as proof-only is valid since no issued notes of the color are known; thus, this technically is a color trial. In the cartouche at left, between two ONE counters, a workman operates a cutting machine (Breaking Hemp). At lower right, beneath a \"1\" counter, is the portrait of Florence Nightingale. The red tinting is exceptional, with the wide left end panel containing the vignette cartouche framed all around by small \"1\" dies. The large oval die in the center outlines ONE, with black outlining ONE DOLLAR across it. The imprint is at the bottom. Plate C. \"Hole Punch Cancelled,\" as made. Noted with \"Hinge Remnants on Back at Center\" that are extremely faint now, and which do not detract from the face. Haxby knew of this proof. Because it came with a titled die proof of the left vignette affixed to a display card, we believe it to be at one time from Julian Blanchard's collection. It does not have Wismer side hinges on the back and has been in the Newman Collection for a considerable time. Visually, this is an exciting American Bank Note Company type with rich color.
