Independence, MO - Southern Bank of St. Louis, at their Bank in Independence $1 June 17, 1861 MO-55 G22a SENC. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent. St. Louis' Southern Bank had branches in far west Independence and much closer St. Charles (Savannah was an authorized branch, but may not have opened). Independence is an interesting branch location. Its cashier, David Waldo, was the owner of eight slaves at the onset of the war. However, he was pro-Union. With the threat of Confederate looting ever present, he protected the bank's assets by leaving town disguised as a woman, with the money hidden appropriately, while there was still time. The Union used the stone bank building as its headquarters and came under attack by the Confederates on August 11, 1862. Like the St. Louis home location, this issued note has the same layout as the previous from the American Bank Note Co., Philada. with vivid green tint on the frame and protector device. \"Intelligence,\" engraved by Charles K. Burt, holds a torch at left; allegorical Science reclines at the top between denomination dies; and an Alfred Sealy-engraved vignette of a young woman is at lower right. Plate A. No. 20079. Signed by cashier J. H. Britton and bank president E. H. Kimball. Grading notes \"Small Edge Tears; Minor Stains on Back.\" The minor faults are due to its circulation. Sharp color is seen throughout, particularly on the guilloche. The type is not illustrated in Haxby for any branch or as a proof. Another significant note from the Newman cabinet. Ex: Eric P.
