Albany imprint. This note epitomizes what fascinates Eric P. Newman about Obsolete Currency. Without a painstaking examination of the note, subtle details could be missed. The key to our puzzlement is the signature, \"B. Rathbun,\" the note's issuer. The signature is very similar to the Rathbun who flooded the Buffalo area with scrip in the 1830s. The intentionally complex titles are in fine print. However, the note is very rare, suggesting that most were redeemed by the Utica banks. Beautifully styled, with an allegorical female representing Plenty and Home Industry leaning against a shield showing New York's rising sun motif. She holds a billowing banner that reads STATE of NEW YORK. Differently styled \"1\" counters are at each side. Ornate end panels show a variety of decorative elements. At the left, a very three-dimensional ONE is in a cartouche between counters. At the right, an abbreviated denomination is in the central cartouche, and the bisected county name is at the top and bottom. This alluring note merits great appreciation by its next curator.
