Built by the emperor Shah Jahan (reg 1628–58) between 1639 and 1648, the Lal Qil‛a was the citadel of his new city Shahjahanabad. The ramparts are provided with a battlemented parapet, machicolations and embrasures. The ornamental cusps of the parapet's merlons are a typical Shah Jahan-period feature. The fort was laid out on the western bank of the Yamuna, while a moat protected the city side. Its two main entrances are the Lahore Gate on the west (the principal entrance) and that known as the Delhi Gate on the south. The emperor Aurangzeb (reg 1658–1707) added barbicans in front of both gates. Most of the palace buildings inside date from Shah Jahan's reign, but a few were added in later times. Some structures, mainly those damaged in the rebellion of 1857, have been demolished.
