He asks for advice on what Eliot would like him to teach “the class”, and states that he is no more familiar with the New Testament than most young boys. Chauvenet shares that he was unable to return to the city in time with his father before the passing of Grandma, owing to a misstep of the telegraph office in relaying Mr. Tafel’s message to Minneapolis in time. He updates on his father’s health and his own, saying that he is feeling much healthier and hope it continues, but remarks that if he is drafted “I shall conclude my time has come and bid farewell to life.” He asks how people in Boston feel about the war and “Grant’s butchers,” and continues to talk at length about his thoughts on various cities and campaigns. He addresses segregation, his thoughts on Copperheads [Peace Democrats], the meaning of “Union”, and several anecdotes on how others have defined to him what a “traitor” is. He mentions that “the Homeopaths” have started a medical college and asked that he lecture in chemistry, but he turned down the offer. He lets Eliot know that he owes two dollars to the Alumni of Washington University, asking that he forward it. Chauvenet remarks on his tendency to write long letters and the price of gold. He asks that Eliot write him from Harvard, and encourages Eliot, Jim, and Chester to “keep up the W.U. standard,” saying that he may be there in a year “to help you, in the Scientific dept[artment].” Regis Chauvenet in St. Louis to T.L.
