There are two hands, one above wielding a dagger ready to strike, and the other palm up, prepared to shake hands. The motto UTRUM HORUM MAVIS ACCIPE 1775 (Accept whichever of these you prefer) aptly explains the symbolism of this vignette from the onset of the Revolutionary War.
