Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. The Newman Collection Wisconsin proofs feature many of the later Milwaukee Obsolete banknotes. These rare to extremely rare proofs span the period from the late 1850s until the commencement of the National Banking period. Most of these titles are virtually unknown in private hands, as proven by the elite Chester L. Krause Wisconsin Collection. Those notes were obtained during 50 years of searching, aided by Krause's statewide and national connections to sources from earlier formed collections. The Bank of Commerce (1854-1856) is one of those extremely rare banks. The plated proofs in the books are from the Madison archives. Chet Krause had only a very low-grade issued $5 note with red protector from this bank. Though this bank is recorded as \"closed,\" it ceased operations \"with loss to no one,\" according to Memoirs of Milwaukee County, edited by Jerome A. Watrous. Circulation would have been redeemed either by the bankers themselves, by the state comptroller, or a combination of both. This bold $5 India paper proof mounted on cardstock is from a wonderful series: all types show the quintessential silver dollar vignettes engraved by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, New York. At the upper right are five lively cherubs with an equal number of silver dollars. One, with spear and quiver of arrows, stands triumphantly atop a coin. The others have various allegorical accessories: scythe, caduceus, hammer and dividers. At lower left, an angel with four wreaths and two trumpets hovers above an ornate \"V\" with sailor, farmer and blacksmith outside and a woman inside with a spool of thread representing Home Industry. We offered two proofs from this series in the Newman Part VI sale. The $1 and $2 denominations, graded PCGS Very Choice New 64PPQ and PCGS Very Choice New 64 respectively, each realized $3,525. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" and \"Mounted on Cardstock\" as made. A small flaw is noted as \"Minor Mounting Remnants.\" This is an exceedingly rare and important Milwaukee proof. Ex: Eric P.
