This rare and scarcely convincing effort dates from the end of the 1st century or the beginning of the 2nd. There is also one instance of an attempt to introduce this hybrid style into temple decoration. The exterior partition wall north of the kiosk of the temple at el-Maharraqa (Hierasykaminos) in Nubia bears a curious bas-relief portraying Isis, dressed in Roman style, viewed frontally and seated under a tree receiving the offering of a figure represented in Hellenistic style. A divine triad, comprising Min, Isis and Serapis, is represented frontally and the clothing is partly in Roman style. On the same wall other divine figures have been carved in traditional style. These attempts at the fusion of the Alexandrian and pharaonic styles had no future and for a long time the sculptors who were contemporaries of the Caesars did their best to remain faithful to the traditions of pharaonic relief work.
