About a dozen large notes are known from this small community, which is located in the far northern reaches of the state a few miles from the Iowa border. The county seat of Scotland County, Memphis was the scene of a Confederate raid in July of 1862 in which a prominent Union supporter, Dr. William Aylward, was captured and soon thereafter murdered by Confederates or sympathizers.
