IN 1876 W. P. TILLEY & CO. OF NORFOLK SUCCEEDED IN BRINGING UP SEVERAL OF THE SHIP'S ORIGINAL OAK TIMBERS, WHICH THEY MANUFACTURED INTO WALKING CANES. THESE WERE SOLD WITH A FOUR PAGE BROCHURE GIVING A SHORT HISTORY OF THE SHIP AND BATTLE, AND ATTESTING TO THE FACT THAT THE OAK WAS, IN FACT, RECOVERED FROM THE MERRIMAC.
