This currency was designed by early inmate Horst-Willi Lippert, a political prisoner with adamant anti-Nazi views. The 5-pfennig note is an image of the camp from the inside. It is done in green and shows the barbed wire that stands between the camp and the outside world. Ironically, the note focuses on the camp with a backdrop of natural beauty. Trees and mountains are placed beside a stark barbed wire fence. While there is the illusion of tranquility inside the camp, on the right is a crowd of prisoners either arriving or heading out for work.
