It served as a sepulchre for Hadrian and Sabina, their adopted son L. Aelius Caesar, the Antonines until Commodus, and Caracalla, who in 217 became the final emperor entombed here. The original appearance of the tumulus-shaped building can be reconstructed from ancient descriptions and Renaissance drawings as well as modern archaeology. Constructed of concrete and travertine and faced with marble, it consisted of a square podium-like base that supported the main drum, the top of which was planted with cypress trees. Above the drum's centre rose a smaller base and drum crowned with statuary, probably Hadrian in a four-horse chariot. The building was surrounded by a pedestrian pavement and enclosed by a low wall with a gilt railing, which was supported by marble pillars topped with gilt peacocks. The podium, much of which has been covered by later masonry, was decorated with Corinthian pilasters and an entablature. The barrel-vaulted tomb chamber is located in the centre of the drum; it is almost square and contains a niche on each wall, presumably for sarcophagi. The Antonine emperors were buried in a square room above the central chamber, which has the same dimensions as the main room below but lacks the two side niches and has a lower ceiling. Above this storey was a chamber divided into two rooms, also apparently for burials. Early in the 5th century it became a fortress. During the plague of 590, Pope Gregory the Great had a vision of the archangel Michael, which resulted in a statue of Michael being placed on top of the building, hence its modern name. In the late 14th century the Castel Sant'Angelo became the private residence of the popes, many of whom made substantial additions and alterations. Alexander VI (reg 1492–1503), for example, completed the four bastions of the square Inner Ward, while Pius IV (reg 1559–65) was responsible for the Outer Ward with its defensive ditch.
