The area visible today is almost entirely the work of Domitian and his architect Rabirius. Although modifications and masonry of other periods can be distinguished, these are work of repair and redecoration rather than remodeling or rebuilding. The only significant additions of a later period seem to be those of Septimius Severus which amounted to a whole new complex, almost a new palace. The plan of the superstructure is entirely lost.
