The Woodburytype plate was first offered in an April 1876 announcement in the American Journal of Numismatics. Depicting coins from Maris's notable collection, the plate is useful for establishing pedigrees as well as being an important adjunct to Crosby's classic. Probably fewer than 100 plates were originally prepared, and today it is infrequently encountered. Also present here are: one copy of the reprint of the Maris Woodburytype plate prepared by Charles Davis, with text by Davis and a copy of Eric P. Newman's letter to Davis thanking him for it; the review of Crosby's book from the American Journal of Numismatics; the original circular dated Nov. 1, 1872, announcing the intention of the New England Numismatic and Archaeological Society to publish the work; an original subscription card for The Early Coins of America; an October 1874 circular by Crosby noting the extension of the book to 11 parts; and three original plate variants from Crosby, with Eric P. Newman's commentary on them, as well as a few duplicates, all used in his \"Bibliographical Foreword\" to the 1983 Quarterman reprint of Crosby. Materials generally near fine. Estimate $1,000.
