Pausanias stated erroneously that Paionios worked on the pedimental sculptures of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia. However, the information given by the inscription of the monumental base of the Olympian Nike is that Paionios won the competition for the acroteria of the Temple of Zeus (c. 430–c. 420 BCE), a gilded bronze Nike at the middle and tripods at the corners. The extant Nike is made from Parian marble and lacks her face and part of the neck, her wings and most of her mantle and arms. The figure originally stood south-east of the east front of the Temple of the Olympian Zeus, overlooking the procession road, on a tapering pillar-base (h. 9 m) of triangular section. According to the inscription on the front part of its pedestal, Nike was a dedication of the Messenians and the Naupaktians of Akarnania in western Greece, made from the spoils of their victory against their enemies. The date of the statue based on stylistic grounds and the information given by Pausanias suggest that the dedication is related primarily to the battle of Sphakteria in south-west Peloponnese in 425 BCE, a victory won together with the Athenians against the Spartans during the Peloponnesian War. The Nike, depicted while alighting, tilting slightly to the left, is considered to be the first successful attempt in Greek sculpture to show a three-dimensional figure in flight. This is facilitated by an absence of Classical weight and by the open wings and the mantle, open at her back, which the figure holds with both her hands. She is clad in a peplos, exposing the right breast and leg, her skirts blown back. The impression of movement in the wind is enhanced by the eagle flying under her feet. The style of the Nike is highly decorative; the combination of the drapery clinging to the body and the drapery flourishing free of it is distinctive of the Rich style, the leading Attic style of that period in sculpture. The head type of the Nike is a variation of the head of the Nike held by the Athena Parthenos of Pheidias (c. 438 BCE).
