Edwards - C.S. Army News Agent and Mail Carrier for Eight Brigade 5 Cents July 14, 1862 Jones & Littlefield PR60-290. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent.  This is a rare and important type of Confederate Army related scrip. Edwards had a profitable arrangement when this note was issued. He would pick up the mail and newspapers in Richmond and deliver these into the field. While at the front he could sell newspapers, postage, and other items and then return to Richmond with the mail to post. Eventually this mail carrier's practice was curtailed, perhaps at the behest of the official regimental sutlers. The Eighth Brigade of the Army of Northern Virginia was composed of Louisiana infantry units, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, and later the 5th. Brigadier General Richard Taylor, son of the late President, commanded them for a time. Four denominations are known. A double-lined border is all around. An adaptation of the state seal is between simple \"5\" counters. End panels show the perpendicular denomination. Edwards' titles are under his signature line. The well-accomplished signature and serial number are in red. Noted with \"Tape Repaired Edge Tears; Minor Stains.\" From the face, this has broad margins all around, especially the bottom, and most of the foxing is confined to the left end. We have handled three examples from the series, which should not lead collectors to believe these are common. Two new notes were discovered in 2006, and we sold them at our Long Beach sale for $2,990 (25 cents) and $3,220 (50 cents). More recently, we sold a 50 cents note at our 2015 FUN Signature sale for $2,115. The eye appeal of this much rarer 5 cents denomination is superior. Ex: Eric P.
