The Wisconsin banking community was tight-knit in this period, and the strict banking laws requiring guaranteed circulation with funds administered by the state comptroller's office protected the public sector. Toppan, Carpenter & Co., New-York & Phila engraved the $1A-$1B-$2-$3 plate for this series, and interestingly, the two $1 positions have completely different vignette structures. The Newman Collection proofs, a complete series set, are all India paper proofs on original cardstock. On this \"A\" position proof, an active port scene, with smokestacks from a train, steamships and factories emitting black smoke, is at the lower left. Toward the right, beneath the arced WISCONSIN is the portrait of a little girl. The Krause collection contained only a $1 bond paper Specimen from this bank that sold for $1,265 in September 2009. Noted as \"Hole Punch Cancelled\" and \"Mounted on Cardstock\" as made. This has a Gem appearance with its well-balanced, broad margins. Ex: Eric P.
