A supreme achievement of the neo-Baroque movement, mixing idealized and naturalistic features in a controlled juxtaposition of figures in the round and figures in high relief, it dominates the square between the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Naturhistorisches Museum. With an eye to civic feeling, the monument was intended to depict not only the Empress but also the 'props of her throne', generals, statesmen and representatives of science and the arts—24 figures in all.
