Now in its 19th year, Guelaguetza is an authentic festival presented each spring by Senderos that includes food, music, dance, music and crafts. This local festival is like the traditional fiestas celebrated each summer in Oaxaca, Mexico. Guelaguetza is a Zapotec word that means “a commitment of sharing and cooperation” and the celebration honors the gods for sufficient rainfall and a bountiful harvest. Local dancers from Senderos were joined by visiting dancers from Oaxaca and the Bay Area to represent all eight regional traditions of Oaxaca. Additionally, musicians from Oaxaca and Los Angeles performed. The marketplace Guelaguetza marketplace included opportunities to purchase Oaxacan crafts, souvenirs, and food and beverage specialties such as mole, tlayudas and tejate. Founded in 2001 by indigenous Oaxacan sisters Fe Silva-Robles and Dr. Nereida Robles Vasquez as an after-school dance club, Senderos is a nonprofit creating successful pathways for the Latino community of Santa Cruz County and building cross-cultural connections locally and abroad.
