Atlas had an enlarged heart and died due to complications from ongoing medical issues. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries from the city of Scotts Valley as well as K-9 officers from a number of agencies from the area. Scotts Valley Police reinstated it's K-9 program in 2014 with the addition of Atlas, and his colleague Odin who joined the ranks in 2019. Using the K-9’s heightened sense of smell and hearing the team assists in multiple police functions including narcotics detection, tracking fleeing suspects or lost individuals by following their scent, article and evidence searches, building searches for hidden suspects, apprehensions and public demonstrations.
