Zimmerman was one of 8650 people who registered for the event, which according to race director Scott McConville still raised $100,000 for local schools, track organizations, track resurfacings, college scholarships and grants. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Wharf to Wharf in-person event was officially cancelled for 2020, and instead held an “on your own, in this together” version of the annual 6 mile, Santa Cruz-to-Capitola road race. Instead of hosting 16,000 people on the 4th Sunday in July, Wharf to Wharf held a virtual race, where people were able to run your 6 miles (to be completed all at once) at the location of their choosing between July 20 and August 6 and then upload the results using the ASICS Runkeeper app onto the Virtual Race Platform. Each year since 1973, on the fourth Sunday in July, thousands of runners from across America and around the globe have returned to Santa Cruz for the annual six-mile race. Limited to 16,000 runners, the race sells out each of its registration windows in a mere few hours and the list of past champions includes a number of former Olympians. Widely acclaimed as “The best little road race in California”, Wharf to Wharf is the biggest summer event of its kind on the West Coast and a boon to local business, annually infusing more than 8 million dollars into the Santa Cruz County economy.
