The current anchovy run, is the largest in recent memory and is providing ample food supplies for birds marine mammals and other predators. According to the Monterey Bay Aquarium's website, \"Baitfish like anchovies and sardines tend to flourish one year in the Monterey Bay and disappear the next. No one knows for sure why this occurs. In the 1940s and 1950s, overfishing certainly played a role, but ocean currents, which transport nutrients and affect the production of larvae, may also be a factor.\" Anchovies frequently appear to be “yawning” but they are opening wide to strain tiny plant and animal plankton from the water. To avoid hungry predators, anchovies swim in schools of thousands where it’s hard for a predator to focus on just one. Northern anchovies are found from British Columbia to Baja California and in the Gulf of California. When anchovies do come to Monterey Bay, they can appear in dense schools and swim into the Santa Cruz Harbor. This can cause a drop in oxygen levels, which can lead to a fish die-off.
