Since March 2020, Dominican Hospital has treated more than 570 COVID-19 inpatients and staff safety is paramount to ensuring that the care and staffing levels can remain as needed. Personal protective equipment (PPE) used by staff include N95 masks, face shield and/or goggles, gowns, gloves, and controlled air-purifying respirators (CAPRs) are required for any aerosolizing procedures with COVID-19 patients and as needed based on nursing judgement. Most staff work 8–12 hour shifts while nurses working a double shift can work up to 16 hours straight. “We really want to educate the public about the ongoing severity of the situation” says Intensive Care Unit supervisor Ray Quintero. “People are still getting sick and needing our care. It’s so important that the community continues to follow all the safety protocols around COVID-19—wear your masks, social distance, only visit with those in your family bubble, and wash those hands.” As of Friday, 14,232 total cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Santa Cruz County, with 955 active cases and 13,109 having recovered. There has been a total of 168 COVID deaths in the county.
