Dinoflagellates, a type of phytoplankton in the bay, are often responsible for the bioluminescence that can seasonally appear along specific central coast beaches. But there’s never a guarantee, making the hunt for these spectacular experiences a challenge that comes with a high reward. Various ocean organisms are bioluminescent including some species of fish, squid, and several gelatinous zooplankton like some jellies and siphonophores. Depending on the species, the bioluminescence can be used to attract prey, like the famous lantern fish, or to escape predators, like certain deep-sea squid that release glowing ink to confuse their hunter. Blooms of dinoflagellates in Monterey Bay can occur seasonally with warmer temperature and calm water, sometimes creating a red tide.
