During the outing to the farm, located on fields owned by Land Trust of Santa Cruz County, families begin with a self-guided tour with a focus on engaging kids and youth in fun farm facts and instead of a traditional CSA produce bag delivery to their home, members get an opportunity to harvest their own vegetables including squash, onions, corn, celery, tomatoes, carrots and cilantro. Esperanza Community Farms aims to be a system-changing, sustainable community agriculture project focused entirely and directly on increasing food security and good health among low-income families from under-resourced communities in the Pajaro Valley. A project of Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Cruz County, Esperanza Community Farms also offers members more traditional CSA boxes filled with fresh, pesticide-free, culturally preferred vegetables and fruit varieties. Now in its third season, the organization invites members to the farm by appointment in order to abide by COVID safety guidelines with a goal of providing much time for families to be together in a safe and educational outdoor setting.
