A state grant in 2018 secured the funding to bring on Nalanie, the department’s first dog. At the time program manager of the Victim Witness Assistance Program at the DA’s Office Sylvia Nieto said, “There has been a lot of research done on what a comfort animal can do for people’s anxiety level.” She said that former District Attorney Bob Lee, who died in 2014, had wanted a comfort dog in the office for years. (Shmuel Thaler - Santa Cruz Sentinel)Swing Left Santa Cruz volunteers culminate their 2024 “Big Send” on Wednesday, bringing 40,000 letters to the Capitola Post Office that they wrote to encourage voters in swing state to cast ballots in the coming election. The letters do not support individual candidates or issues, rather they are intended to encourage people to vote. The effort's local coordinator Jane Eagan said, “all our letters are nonpartisan and encourage voting – not changing opinion. Campaigns have other activities to persuade, but our effort is helping democracy the old fashion way – from one voter to another voter - one at a time.” Rhonda Johnson, part of the Swing Left Santa Cruz leadership team, added, “Our local effort is all about motivating underrepresented and infrequent voters to vote. We believe voting should be accessible and easy across the country and in every election.” Swing Left is a national grassroots organization with over 400 local affiliates in 40 states and will mail over 7 million handwritten letters to individual voters.
