The piece, featuring the virtuosic talents of violinist Leila Josefowicz is composed as one continuous movement and falls into three main sections connected by dreamlike interlinking passages. In late July and early August each year, audiences are joined by both preeminent and emerging composers, spectacular guest artists, and an orchestra of dedicated professional musicians from across the globe at the festivla to give voice to works which are rarely more than a year or two old, and sometimes still “wet on the page”. The opportunity for composers to work with musicians skilled and enthusiastic about bringing these new works to life, in the beautiful, coastal college-town of Santa Cruz, California, makes this an artistic paradise. With a professional training workshop for early career conductors and composers, open rehearsals almost daily, educational programming, and much more, the Cabrillo Festival has dozens of opportunities for meaningful engagement. The festival’s story began in the summer of 1961 when young composer-musician Robert Hughes stepped from a Greyhound bus at the Sticky Wicket coffeehouse in Aptos along the then two-lane Highway 1. He had just arrived from Italy to study with composer Lou Harrison. A year later, Cabrillo College opened its Aptos campus and on August 21, 1963 about 300 people attended the opening night concert at the Cabrillo College Theater. More than six decades later the festival in recognized as one of the globes premier festivals of contemporary music. WQXR named Cabrillo Festival “one of the top five incubators of new music” in the world, and The Wall Street Journal described the Festival as “two of the most thoughtful and original summer musical weekends anywhere in America.” (Shmuel Thaler - Santa Cruz Sentinel)"},{"label":"Creator","value":["Thaler, Shmuel"]},{"label":"Title","value":"Violinist"},{"label":"Series Title","value":"2024 Choice"},{"label":"Collection Description","value":"The Shmuel Thaler photographs collection contains photographs by Santa Cruz Sentinel photographer Shmuel Thaler.
