Much of the smoke, which was coming in from the rapidly growing Bear Fire near Chico and Creek Fire near Shaver Lake, remained at high altitude instead of settling near the surface by high winds and a strong marine layer. Social media feeds throughout Santa Cruz County and the San Francisco Bay area were filled with images and comments depicting an apocalyptic feeling created by the phenomena.
