I will present my essay on The Hierarchy of Values (our archaic value system that still, often unwittingly, instigates discriminatory tendencies), and how embracing our shared vulnerability to uncertainty, while promoting diversity, can help overcome them. Here is an introduction and then a rough outline of my essay: “God requireth not a uniformity of religion to be enacted and enforced in any civil state; [such] enforced uniformity ... is the greatest occasion of civil war, ravishing of conscience ... and the hypocrisy and destruction of millions of souls” (Roger Williams, The Bloody Tenent of Persecution). Before the establishment of the United States of America as an independent, democratic nation in 1774, citizens such as Roger Williams, who believed in the  freedom of religion, were ridiculed and harassed. With the Constitution of the United States’ initiation, the freedom of religion is guaranteed under the First Amendment. Sadly, the “hypocrisy and destruction of millions of souls” that Williams speaks to have arguably come to pass under the auspices of hierarchical oppression stemming from inherently religious beliefs. This oppression takes the form of the prioritization of qualities, beliefs, thoughts, and emotions (or lack thereof) of the dominant groups in society that mirror a hierarchy of values primarily composed of mind over body, up over down, and light over dark. Singling out the hierarchical structures that have been historically and cross-culturally enforced - from a reaction to the paralyzing fear of uncertainty - as the primary issue facing society, we must shift to a more collective consciousness that maintains individuality while engaging innate accountability to humanity: one that unites around our shared vulnerability to the unknown. Essentially, one does not have to relinquish their autonomous individuality to employ accountability. With the hierarchical tendencies as my catalyst, I begin by describing their mystical origins. I then move to the effects of the main proponent of the hierarchical system of values, cosmological dualism: the focus on transcendence of our current world permeates culture and society. It is from our fear of death and lack of control over our most vulnerable facets that drives the continuation of these hierarchies. Continuing, I offer a counter-argument to the aspiring rebuttal of these hierarchies, the spiritual but not religious movement. Using various resources, I argue for the positive aspects of communal spirituality, proposing that the problem of inherent discrimination lies not with communal religion or religious systems themselves, but within the hierarchical tendencies of many restrictive religious institutions. Moving on to our perception of the contradicting nature of individualism and universalism, I contend our shared vulnerability unites us to the collective effects of our individual choices. We are also vulnerable to the events in our life, as well as the choices of others, that we have no control over. It is our autonomous freedom, as members of the collective, that initiates change and progression towards a more perfect union within our country, within our species, and within our world. The direction of power between those in control and those they fear from association is part of the historical fabric of America.
