The fourth chromosome, known as the Muller F element, is very small with relatively few genes. However, the structure of the fourth chromosome changes within the Drosophila genus, especially in the related species Drosophila anannasae, which has an expanded fourth chromosome. Previous work, utilizing with the support of the Genomic Education Partnership (GEP), indicated that a region of the 4th chromosome in D. ananassae was similar in gene content to the analogous region of the 4th chromosome in D.melanogaster. One of the genes found in both D. melanogaster and D. anannasae was Plexin A (PlexA). The structure of the PlexA gene was similar in both species and the protein sequences contained a high similarity. The PlexA protein serves as a receptor for semaphorin 1a (sema1a) and semaphorin 1b (sema1b) which plays a vital role in the guidance of axons in the central nervous system (CNS). We will be presenting further analysis of the presence of the PlexA gene in other Drosophila species and investigating how the PlexA gene is expressed in these other
