The McChristian family, James being 17 years oldat the time, joined the Grigsby-Ide wagon party in 1845 headed to California and was involved in the Bear Flag Revolt in Sonoma in 1846. James McChristian married Rosa Romain, a French native, in 1870. They farmed in Freestone and Green Valley, raising grapes and owned 540 acres at the time of his death. James was 86 when he attended the dedication by the Native Sons of the Golden West of the Bear Flag Monument in Sonoma on June 14, 1914.
