About four years as caterer and restaurateur were enough multitasking for her, and she closed Fans to concentrate on Night Owl. Barbara is a San Francisco native, but her culinary roots reach to China, where her father was a master chef before emigrating to California. Barbara didn't immediately follow in his footsteps--she majored in math in college. But a stint working in restaurants around Europe convinced her of her true calling.
