His 1932 book \"Santa Rosans I Have Known,\" introduced readers to famous (and infamous) residents of his hometown. But Finley himself was an interesting character. His mother, Sarah Latimer Finley, was a writer whose essays were published in national magazines and a leader in the women's suffrage movement. His father, William Finley, was a minister and an educator who brought his family to Santa Rosa when he was named president of Pacific Methodist College. As a teenager, Ernest he earned spending money producing playbills for the Athenaeum theater on an old press he purchased. By 22, his business evolved into a commercial operation. By 25, he started a daily newspaper called The Evening Press. By 27, he bought out his competition, the 40-year-old Sonoma Democrat, and The Press Democrat was born. Three years later, in 1900, Finley bought up his partners' shares and became the sole owner, publisher, editor and principal writer of The Press Democrat.
