This is the Russian River Valley, the farthest point reached by Russian explorers when they owned all of Alaska and coast in between. Historic Fort Ross on the ocean. The chapel is now being restored.  They sold their settlement in 1841 to John Sutter, the man who discovered gold in California. All they left behind was Fort Ross (Russ) on the coast, and the name of the river, which seems strangely out of place in this peaceful and lush California countryside.  The river has its own incredible history. It once flowed southward into San Francisco Bay. Millions of years ago, a gigantic upheaval of the earth's surface redirected the river westward, through the coastal mountains to the PacificOcean. This fortunate geological phenomenon carved out a passage for oceanfogs to penetrateinto the sunny inner valley. The systematic cooling of the vineyards is the envy of California's wine industry and results in grapes of superior quality and flavor.  The Foppiano family came to the valley in 1864. Great-grandfather John arrived from Italy to seek his fortune in the gold fields. Instead, he found his life's work in the vineyards near Healdsburg. His oldest son, Louis, took over the winery in 1910. In those early days, the wine went in horse-drawn wagons and wooden casks to old San Francisco, where customers brought their own jugs for filling.   Today, the third and fourth generations of the Foppianos are carrying on the family traditions. Father Louis Joseph is the winemaker. His son Lou is winery manager, and son Rod is viticulturist in charge of the vineyards.  This fourth-generationfamily winery is only 200 acres in size, with the Russian River flowing through the vineyards for a mile and a half. The days are hot, reaching 85 to 90 degrees by 11 or 12 o'clock during the growing season. The fog comes in during the evening, cooling the vineyards to 50 or 60 degrees. These are ideal wine conditions.  The cooling gives the grapes a chance to breathe, explains Louis Joseph Foppiano. \"Our white grapes are as good as any,and our red grapes are better. You notice it in the flavor when you taste the wine.\"  In recent years, the Foppianos have replaced older vines with new plantings of varietal grapes -cabernet sauvignon, pinot noir, petite sirah, pinot, chardonnay,sauvignon blanc, gamay beaujolais and zinfandel. These are the most prized grapes in the world and are used to make the most premium wines. The Foppiano Winery produces limited amounts per year of any one varietal.  \"When you get bigger, you can lose control of quality,\" says Lou. \"We plan to stay small, a familyowned winery producing limited amounts of outstanding wine\"  Fog from the ocean cools the grapes, resulting in better quality and flavor   The Foppiano Winery office is a restored caboose from the Northwestern Pacific Railroad--old No. 14. Lou Foppiano says, \"We put our money into the wine, not into a fancy winery.\"   Foppiano wines are aged in wood, and the premium varietal wines are all made from Russian River grapes warmed by the sun and cooled by the fogo' It From time to time, we improve our methods and our equipment,\" says Rod, Hand we are steadily improving our vineyards with new plantings of premium varietal grapes. But wines are in the head and the heart of the winemaker. The way a wine tastes and how people enjoy it come from the winemaker's years of experience and his knowledge of his own particular grapes and wines.\"  \"It's not chemistry or equipment,\" says Lou. \"We know our grapes and how they will blend and taste. We blend our grapes in the vineyard, not in the winery. This is a tradition and skill that money can't buy. In a small family winery, we can make wine the way we used to.\""},{"label":"Title","value":"Side 2"},{"label":"Filename","value":"cstr_doc_000201_02.jp2"}]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/f197e99d-4750-4797-a09a-e05de0f6a556/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/e0b76a8a-70f6-4c11-a56e-bd72d1b71ac8/canvas/_3","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"cstr_doc_000202_01","height":4000,"width":3142,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/019974c2-f372-488e-8490-f3ac890633df/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jp2","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/019974c2-f372-488e-8490-f3ac890633df","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":4000,"width":3142},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/e0b76a8a-70f6-4c11-a56e-bd72d1b71ac8/canvas/_3","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/019974c2-f372-488e-8490-f3ac890633df/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/e0b76a8a-70f6-4c11-a56e-bd72d1b71ac8/canvas/_4","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"cstr_doc_000202_02","height":4000,"width":3142,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/9ee94475-38c8-412c-bacf-8b18f13b1020/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jp2","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/9ee94475-38c8-412c-bacf-8b18f13b1020","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":4000,"width":3142},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/e0b76a8a-70f6-4c11-a56e-bd72d1b71ac8/canvas/_4","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/9ee94475-38c8-412c-bacf-8b18f13b1020/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/e0b76a8a-70f6-4c11-a56e-bd72d1b71ac8/canvas/_5","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"cstr_doc_000202_03","height":4000,"width":3157,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/859a729b-d6da-47a4-b3a6-36ef1c6063f8/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jp2","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/859a729b-d6da-47a4-b3a6-36ef1c6063f8","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":4000,"width":3157},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/e0b76a8a-70f6-4c11-a56e-bd72d1b71ac8/canvas/_5","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/859a729b-d6da-47a4-b3a6-36ef1c6063f8/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/eb84f779-7529-40f9-b732-60fc77b39c74/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/sonomalibrary/iiif/logo"}
