Pat and Jane Paulsen bought their 550 acre ranch outside of Cloverdale in 1970. By 1971 Pat had planted his first vineyard.:.ten acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. In 1975 he followed with seven acres of Sauvignon Blanc. By 1978 the Sauvignon Blanc vineyard was increased by six acres and six acres of Chardonnay were introduced. In 1979 the Paulsens decided to build a winery and produce their own wines. William Hooton, as General Manager, was asked to organize and oversee the building. Mary Ann Graf was engaged as their consultant and she brought Jamie Meves from U.C. Davis as the winemaker. 1980 saw the first bottling of 1,600 cases of Sauvignon Blanc. In 1981 Cabernet was bottled, as well as Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscat Canelli with grapes from Lou Preston Vineyards at Dry Creek. In 1982 another six acres of Chardonnay were planted. None of this variety has been marketed as yet. In May of 1984 the first general release of Paulsen Chardonnay is scheduled and will complete the list of wines produced at the winery. In June 1983 a tasting room and retail outlet was opened in historic Asti Village across the Russian River from the winery. The most asked question: Is it really THE Pat Paulsen?\" It really is. His dream of producing 25,000 cases of very good wine each year is becoming more of a reality too. Cabernet sauvignon. Planted in 1971, this vineyard has reached maturity, producing consistently soft, varietally intense wines. Aged 12-14 months in small American Oak barrels and showing moderate tannin levels, this wine is meant for early consumption. It should hold its quality peak for 3 to 5 years after release. Vintage 1980 selected by University of California, Davis Wine Memento Program in celebration of their 75th Anniversary 0/83. Sauvignon blanc. Encouraged by the early success of Chateau St. Jean with our grapes, we look for ever better quality as this vineyard approaches maturity. Wines from these grapes have displayed wonderful complexity, combining the varietal grassiness of cool climate Sauvignon Blanc and spiciness often found in this variety in warm regions. It is designed and produced here as a food wine, supported by the good acid structure necessary to compliment fish and poultry dishes in particular. Vintage 1981 -Silver Medal, Sonoma County Harvest Fair 10/82. Muscat canelli. Unlike most Muscats produced as desert wine, we have created a dry Alsatian style wine which surprises the first time taster both with its perfumey, spicey aroma and its dry, acid balanced flavors. Its versatility compliments many types of food, including, but certainly not limited to fruit and cheese, sauerkraut and sausage and even some curries.
